Roots Garden is a program for POC clients. This collaborative community effort in Palatine Illinois runs on volunteer work through our client families. Our goal is to provide POC client/families in need with healthy foods and in the process build a stronger, connected community. Our journey began with an idea from a retired fire department chief during the cold winter months of early 2012. This idea became a reality during the Spring of 2012. Today thanks to POC’s ROLE volunteers, the Palatine Fire Department Benevolence Fund, the Palatine Park District, Village of Palatine, IL., School District 15, Ware Landscaping, Cook County Farm Fresh Bureau, Kitchen Gardeners International, Herman’s Seeds, Thive Vineyard Church, Prince of Peace Church and the many friends of the POC that stop by with garden goodies, Roots Garden is in its second growing season. At the highest growing season, nearly 70 adult portions of vegetables were picked daily!

Join us on our journey as we learn to garden, feed those in need and learn to grow our Roots as a community at or on Facebook at

“Gardens, scholars say, are the first sign of commitment to a community. When people plant corn they are saying, let’s stay here. And by their connection to the land, they are connected to one another.”?-  Anne Raver
